JMA performs VAULTIS1 data assessments and data governance reviews to provide recommendations for complying with the DoD Data Strategy
Challenge
Aligning DoD Data Practices with VAULTIS Framework for Enhanced Data Governance
JMA was tasked with implementing the VAULTIS framework for a Department of Defense (DoD) organization. The challenge was to align the organization’s data practices with the goals outlined in the DoD Data Strategy: making data Visible, Accessible, Understandable, Linked, Trustworthy, Interoperable, and Secure (VAULTIS). The company needed to conduct data assessments and data governance reviews to identify gaps and recommend improvements in compliance with the strategy.
Solution
Elevating Data Practices through Management and Governance Assessments
To address the challenge, JMA devised a comprehensive solution that included two key components: Data Management Assessment and Data Governance Maturity Assessment.
Data Management Assessment
JMA conducted a thorough analysis of the organization’s data processes, comparing them to industry best practices. They identified areas for improvement and developed a detailed plan for enhancing data management practices. This involved streamlining data collection, storage, processing, and sharing processes to align with the VAULTIS principles.
Data Governance Maturity Assessment
JMA assessed the organization’s data governance practices based on industry standards. Data governance and management experts identified gaps in the current governance framework and provided recommendations to elevate the organization’s data governance maturity. This included establishing roles and responsibilities for data stewards, custodians, and managers, as well as implementing policies for data access, protection, quality, and dissemination.
Impact
Transforming Data Practices for Enhanced Efficiency and Future Readiness
JMA’s implementation of the Yellowbrick data warehouse ensured the successful migration of 1+ petabytes of data with multiple ETL streams and front-end reporting tools. The migration was successfully performed to meet end-of-life deadlines. The Yellowbrick solution has provided a significant cost savings to the government.
Improved Data Alignment
By conducting a data gap analysis, the organization gained insights into areas where its data practices were not aligned with the DoD Data Strategy’s VAULTIS principles. This enabled targeted improvements that directly addressed gaps and shortcomings.
Enhanced Data Governance
The data governance maturity assessment provided a roadmap for strengthening the organization’s data governance practices. Clear roles, responsibilities, and policies were established, ensuring that data was handled consistently, securely, and ethically across the organization.
Operational Efficiency
Through streamlined data management processes and improved governance, the organization was better equipped to make data-driven economic decisions. Decision-makers had access to accurate, timely, and trustworthy data, leading to more informed choices and improved operational outcomes.
Future Readiness
By embracing modern data practices and aligning with VAULTIS principles, the organization positioned itself for future data-centric challenges and opportunities. The implementation plan set the foundation for continued growth in data management and governance capabilities.
